ArgentinaI made a side trip to Puerto Iguazu, Argentina while visiting Iguassu Falls of Brazil in 2006. By crossing border two days in a row, I got two Argentina boarder stamps on my passport.

BrazilBrazil is a country I dreamed of visiting for a long time. I heard a lot about it, from world famous beaches, to rich African cultures, to beautiful women. This raised my desire to see it through my own eyes. In the summer of 2006, my dream came true. I had a chance to visit the country for three weeks.

There are four places I visited on this trip, starting from Sao Paulo, flying south to Foz do Iguassu, then heading north to Salvador, coming back to Rio de Janeiro. Personally, I like Iguassu Fall and Salvador far better than two major cities, because its beauty and nature.

While in Brazil, 2006 FIFA World Cup just started. I witnessed the soccer fever in a soccer country. You can see national color (yellow and green) every where. When the game started, the whole country went to a halt. Joining the local crowd, I watched several games in the restaurant and hotel, to be part of the history. Unfortunately, Brazil team didn't get into quarterfinals. The joke is that current president will be blamed for the loss and he will lose the election in August. Let's see.

CanadaI visited Toronto in 2001 for one night. That does not count as a visit. But in March of 2003, I had an opportunity to spend seven days in Ottawa, and I enjoyed this bitter cold city very much. In summer of 2007, I had another chance to visit Montreal for a weekend.

MexicoBefore going to Mexico, I have various views about the country from movies. After visiting this place, you really like it, especially if you are a good fan of movies like "Y Tu, Mama Tambien" and "Sex and Lucia".

USAHow many states have I visited since arrived here many years ago? Well, probably more than 20. After living here for more than 19 years, I moved out of USA for a job assignment. However, I still come back every once a while.

AustraliaDuring the April of 2001, I visited Australia for the first time. Within two week period, I had chance to see the city life in Sydney and natural beauty around Melbourne. The most impressive thing about Australia is her coastline, the cliffs and ocean water. Of course, seeing some of my friends after 15+ years left another wonderful memory. You can see one of them in my pictures.

IndiaI have interest in India for some years. It has the largest democracy in the world, but had difficulty to solve the poverty problem for its large population. Recently, it became the outsourcing Mecca for the Western businesses. What it really looks like? At the beginning of 2006, I had the first opportunity to visit the country, although in a short period of time and covered a small portion of this large country. I should say it is not the same as I thought. People are working very hard. They are quite friendly towards foreigners. You can live like a King when you have enough money. This is the first place I was called "sir" so many times by service people. It made me uneasy sometimes.

JapanDuring 1985 to 1988, I lived in Japan for my graduate study. During that period of time, I toured many areas while attending conferences or visiting friends. Many years have past, all left are those fond memory of this beautiful country. I went back there twice since 1988 to meet old friends and cover more regions. I will be back again and again.

VietnamVietnam

Vietnam is a familiar name to many of us came through 1970's. To many people it is a war torn country by carpet bombing and miserable jungles. However, I heard a lot of good things about her, especially its nature beauty in recent years. That triggered my interest in visiting this country.

In April of 2005, I set my feet on Vietnam's soil. Immediately, it reminded me China 10 or 15 years ago. People are hard working to improve their lives. There are construction sites everywhere (but no high rise buildings yet). What is different is that the streets are flooded with motorcycles, especially in large cities like Hanoi. I was told this is partially due to lack of adequate public transportations. Fortunately, I saw more bicycles in small towns. I hope they keep it this way.

It is not easy to select and categorize thousands of pictures taken there. I put more emphasis on what is unique in Vietnam, its traditional way of life and mountain tribes. Hope you will like these pictures.

In the Christmas, 2003, I visited Puerto Rico. Drove around the island and walked on the beach. To me this place has nothing special.

ItalyItaly has been associated with arts, not just renaissance art, but people, movies, shoes, jackets, etc, those modern artifacts. In 2010, I had a chance to spend more than two weeks in northern Italy to breathe this artistic atmosphere. Driving a Fiat Panda car, I was up and down to big cities like Milano, and small villages in Tuscany. It is absolutely beautiful.

ScotlandCountry Roads in Scotland

Before leaving for Scotland, I was worried about weather conditions in the Fall. The forecast puts raining sign on my entire trip. It turns out that is the best way to see Scotland. First, the rain starts and stops several times a day, hardly lasts more than 30 minutes. Second, between the rains, clouds and sun move in to create a dramatic scenery you cannot see in any other places. Third, the rain keeps everything green. Cheers for RAIN!

Except the motor way journey between London and Scotland, I spent close to ten days in Scotland. It is my first time driving on the left hand side for a considerable amount of time and distance, especially on narrow streets. It went OK except one front wheel cover was knocked off at a curve. No big deal :-). From the following map, you can see the trail of this trip. Purposely, big cities like Glasgow and St. Andrews are bypassed; but focusing on small villages and country roads. The more back roads you explore, the better scenery you can find.

Oops, forgot to give a high five to Microsoft AutoRoute 2006 for Europe with GPS. It made my driving so easy, day or night, small villages or big cities, with or without road signs.

Spain I heard about Spain a long time ago, mostly in history books. Its strong Navy and famous explorers like Christopher Columbus became an integral part of many countries in Americas, including US. I spent my 2006 Thanksgiving here to explore Barcelona and Sitges for the first time.

EgyptAll of sudden, a shepherd led his herds crossing a busy six lane throughway in Cairo (see picture). So far I heard about donkey carriages and modern vehicles share the road, but never heard about you need to watch sheep along with pedestrians while driving, since they might be well part of the over crowded Cairo. This was my last day shock in a 13 day trip to Egypt in October, 2004.

When I was traveling in England, I became interested in various mail boxes, especially different royal dynasty styles are still visible in rural areas. Now I pay attention to mail boxes in other countries too。

Neighborhood.jpg

During the building boom since 1990's, a lot of apartments have been built in Shanghai, China. From an average of four (4) sq meters per person in 1970 to 30 in 2009, it is quite an achievement. With the continuous influx of migrant workers (both white collar and blue collar), there are never enough housing units to residents; on top of those real estate investors with multiple units under their names. Even during the 2009 worldwide recession, the housing price still went up 20-30% in one year. Shanghai is not cheaper than Tokyo or New York City anymore. This is a crazy city with a hard-to-understand housing market.

This set of pictures showcases one of those apartments, from inside and out. It is located next to the Pudong Century Park. The building was built in 2002 on a farm land. With just eight years, the area has matured with schools, hospitals, supermarkets and two shopping plazas. It is one of those sought after residential district in Pudong area.
